H-4 Aircraft (Spruce Goose)

Designated as H-4 (Hughes 4th Aircraft, this Flying Boat was primarily made of Birch Wood (Spruce Goose???). It was constructed during WWII of wood as no metal could be used during Wartime.
Just to give one an idea of how large it is, the dimensions were as follows:
Wingspan - 320 feet
Length - 219 feet
Height - 80 feet
It was flown only once (November 2, 1947) by Howard Hughes and then it was retired.
It presently resides at Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon.

  1. Nice! Glad to know that this classic had not been cut up for firewood and that someone still has a respect for historical things.
