White Sands National Monument off Route 70 in New Mexico

One drives their car on a paved road for about 5 miles until the road becomes all white sand. The white sand road continues for about another 3 miles. The road has areas on the side of the road where you can park the car and go exploring.
The white sand is actually gypsum left behind when the surrounding water bodies evaporate. Don't tell anyone but someones might get surprised when their papa returns.

  4. I agree....almost looks like a snow drift! I thought I read that you can actually walk on some of it as it hardens kinda like plaster??

  6. Dave,
I was stationed at Holloman AFB in Alamoguardo, NM. I walked on those white sands many times. People sled and tobbogan ride down the slopes of the white sands. Pretty cool, or should I say pretty hot!
